Father states, "I was asleep" when his 2 children are found drowned

A Detroit father claimed he was asleep when his children, both under 2 years of age, drowned in a bathtub.  In addition, the children where found with scold burns on different parts of their bodies.

Father pleads not guilty in the death of his two children

  1. Jean Bonilla PSC 201 Sec. 09

unfortunately this is a very sad story. I find it hard to sympathize with the father, Steven Nicholson, because his claim does not seem truthful. according to the article, Nicholson was charged with domestic abuse, had a long record of misdemeanors and had a drinking problem. I don't think this makes him a murderer but it definitely is a red flag.
Secondly, the children were 12 and 13 months old. A cousin of Nicholson stated that he thinks the children climbed in the bathtub and proceeded to turn the hot water on all by themselves. This to me seems almost impossible! I think these children could not possibly have the strength to climb in a tub by themselves. Even if one of them were able to climb in, I think the odds of the other child to do it as well is slim.
Lastly, I am not a parent but I can just imagine that if any parent has to young babies in the house you wouldn't leave them in any room unattended let alone go to sleep while they are wandering the house. He clearly is an unfit parent. I think he probably was drinking and smoking marijuana in the house while his children were there, then maybe wanted to give them a bath. Since drinking can impair ones judgement he may have left the room, got distracted and passed out somewhere else. Although, there is an argument to my story. The children had burns all over their body which i'm sure were painful. They must have been crying very loud, loud enough that I think anyone would wake up if they were sleeping. This points to Nicholson being a murderer.
Steven Nicholson's case was arraigned Oct. 22 on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of felony murder and two counts of first-degree child abuse. Some say the cause of death was not certain so there is plans to have more medical examinations. I hope he goes to jail because even if he didn't intentionally murder his children his actions were wrong and could have been prevented if he was in the right state of mind.

  2. The information given in this article leads me to believe that the father did murder his two children. I would remain unbiased until further information and evidence is uncovered.
